by Irvin L. Scott
Recently, I had the delightful opportunity to meet Harvard professor, Dr. Irving L. Scott. His impressive resume was only outdone by his impressive person. We spent a wonderful hour discussing life, our families, education, and more.
Irving Scott brings a lifetime of educational experience to the pages of Leading with Heart and Soul: 30 Inspiring Lessons of Faith, Learning, and Leadership for Educators. When it comes to education, this man has “been there done that” . . . from the classroom to administrative leadership to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation back to the graduate school of Harvard and on through the founding of Harvard’s Leadership Institute for Faith and Education. But this book is more than educational reflections, Scott is also husband, father, grandfather, minister, teacher, choir director; non-profit leader and foundation executive.
So why write the book? Scott notes:
Through stories from my thirty years in education, leading with Heart and Soul channels the wisdom I have received from my peers and elders, the insights I have gained htorugh experience, and the faith and sense of calling that have sustained me through my career, making these lessons accessible for today’s leaders both in the field of education and in other fields. xvi
I’m just diving in, but if the book mirrors our hour in my office, I’m in for a treat — and pages of wisdom and learning.
